Past Exams Current Status: Phasing Out

The central Past Exams repository service will cease December 2025

Background:

Until 2015 the Library processed multiple-choice exam papers and hosted digitised readings and exam papers using the Masterfile Digital Asset Management system, which was essential when sustainable digital hosting methods were limited.
Exam setters could opt to make their exams accessible to students by ticking a box when submitting to the Exams Office. The Exams Office would then transfer the papers to the Library on a USB stick a few times a year.

Changes in 2018:

The Library adopted Talis for Readings due to its superior copyright compliance and systems integration compared to Masterfile. However, Talis's copyright functions made hosting exam papers problematic, leading to the development of a bespoke system for past exam papers.
Concurrently, the Exams Office stopped bulk submissions of past exam papers to the Library, leaving it to individual academics to supply the papers.

Current Situation:

Almost no new exam papers are submitted to the Library.
Examination and assessment methods are evolving due to the widespread use of Artificial Intelligence tools.
Academic staff now have various options to host exams as they see fit.

Conclusion:

The Library is deprecating the Past Exams service as it no longer aligns with our role, has diminishing utility for students, and creates unnecessary work for staff.
Access will cease in December 2025. Future access to past exam papers will be at the discretion of subject coordinators.
