What is ReadCube?

ReadCube is a web application (desktop, browser, IOS and Android) that allows you to build personal online library of online articles you've discovered for to support your research. It is free on one device, but if you want to sync between devices there is a cost.

The choice to use it is yours but the Library does not formally support it. Alternatives (with varying levels of JCU Library support from 'lots' to 'none' include EndNote, Browzine, Mendeley, Refworks and Zotero)

It requires different preference settings in the desktop and mobile apps depending on whether you are on or off campus. Once set up it is a simple toggle between the two settings.

Getting it to Work Off Campus

It can work with EZproxy to allow off campus access to subscription journal articles by:

  1. Click on on the gear icon to enter Preferences
  2. Click the Institution Affiliation tab
  3. Tick the Select your university or institution radio button
  4. Search for James Cook University of North Queensland
  5. Close Preferences

Getting it to Work On Campus

  1. Click on on the gear icon to enter Preferences
  2. Click the Institution Affiliation tab
  3. Tick the No Affiliation radio button
  4. Close Preferences

Why is this Required?

The application is still in development and has not been programmed to handle institutions that allow automatic access to EZproxy for on campus users - so if you have the off campus settings right and are on campus and automatically using EZproxy without a login a ReadCube process on their web site can't access the content even though the process on your device can.
