Q. I can't read my subject's Pressbook on my iPad/Mac using Safari – how can I access it?
When using an iPad or Mac, I can't access the Pressbooks ebook for my subject. I get an "Access Denied" message saying the book is only available to registered users, but I'm an enrolled student and my classmates can get to it.
If you are accessing your Pressbooks e-textbook in LearnJCU (Blackboard) and it is set to private so only enrolled students can use the book, Safari's privacy settings will stop you from accessing the book.
Safari may also prevent you from using other LTIs in LearnJCU (Blackboard), so it is better to use a different browser, like Chrome, when using LearnJCU.
If you wish to continue using Safari, you can change the privacy settings in Safari to allow access.
Go to the Settings for Safari, navigate to "Privacy" on a Mac or "Privacy & Security" on an iPhone or iPad, find the Option to "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" and turn it off. You may also need to turn off the setting to "Block All Cookies".
N.B., while this is a known Safari problem, if you suddenly have the same "access denied" message using other browsers, your security settings in those browsers may have been changed in a recent update. Find the equivalent settings for the browser you are using. If you still cannot access the book, contact the library using our contact form or email us and tell us what device you are using, what browsers you have tried and what error messages you get. The more information you can provide us, the more quickly we can find a solution.
