An advance online publication refers to journal articles that have been peer reviewed, edited, typeset, formatted, and made available online, but have not yet been assigned to a volume or issues of the journal it is published in. These articles are usually published with descriptors like 'in press', 'early access' or 'online first', and are subject to the same copyright provisions as the final published version.
