For assignments that are not going to be made public use the Images option in the APA Guide for anything that is not part of the text of your document and not a table. Graphs, photographs, illustrations and charts are all examples of figures.   

Treat images taken from books and journals in the text, in brackets in the image caption (including the page number) similar to a direct quote.  Images on the internet should be treated like a webpage.

If you are reproducing a figure created by someone else (even if you have adapted it), and your paper is going to be made public (e.g., a thesis or a journal article), then you need to give a copyright notice in the caption below your figure.  Follow the APA guide for Figures more details.
