Different referencing styles give different advice about what to include in your word count. For example, APA recommends to count everything, even headers and footers. However, the final decision is made by your college or lecturer.

In many cases, markers count all the words in the main part of your assignment (including quotes and in-text citations), but they do not count the reference list. This isn’t always the same for every course.

To be sure, check your Subject Outline and ask your lecturer what you should include in your word count.
